Ship Smarter and Save More with NAVAL CARGO

Have you ever wondered why a lightweight package can cost more to ship than a heavier one? The answer may be volumetric weight.

In international shipping, freight charges are often calculated based on either the actual weight or the volumetric weight of a shipment, depending on the carrier’s pricing rules. Volumetric weight reflects the amount of space a package occupies during transportation.

How to Calculate Volumetric Weight

For many air freight shipments, a commonly used formula is:

Volumetric Weight (kg) = Length (cm) × Width (cm) × Height (cm) ÷ 5,000

Example: If your package measures 60 × 40 × 30 cm:

60 × 40 × 30 ÷ 5,000 = 14.4 kg

If the actual weight is only 8 kg, the volumetric weight is 14.4 kg. The carrier may therefore charge based on the higher billable weight, subject to its applicable terms.

Tips to Reduce Shipping Costs

• Choose suitable packaging: Avoid unnecessarily large boxes.

• Optimize package dimensions: Use compact, protective packaging without compromising product safety.

• Consolidate shipments: Where practical, combine multiple packages to improve shipping efficiency.

• Check the billing method: Confirm the carrier’s volumetric divisor, rounding rules, and chargeable-weight policy before shipping.

Please note that the divisor and calculation method may vary by carrier, service type, and shipment route.
